Spring is here and that means many of you are gearing up to plant your favorite edible flowers, vegetables and herbs. To inspire and give you ideas, here is a few tips to get you started.
Getting the soil ready, here is a few things to enrich the soil.
Bark, ground: made from various tree barks. …Compost: excellent conditioner.Leaf mold: decomposed leaves that add nutrients and structure to soil.Lime: raises the pH of acid soil and helps loosen clay soil.Manure: best if composted. …Peat moss: conditioner that helps soil retain water.
Things to plant now;
Leafy greens. Fall-planted leafy greens such as kale and collards are not only tough enough to survive the cold – and even snow – they usually taste all the better for it. …Alliums. …Garlic. …Peas and broad beans. …Broccoli and cauliflower. …Cabbage. …Root vegetables. …Herbs.Nasturtiums, violas and other edible flowers. …

Last years summer garden photos, just goes to show how much a backyard garden can yield. To make my gardens pretty I also include edible flowers like nasturtiums and violas that bloom throughout the year.
